Finals Game 1

REBELS EDGE FIGHTING AMIGOS IN DEFENSIVE BATTLE
SAN JOSE -- Despite scoring just six points in the fourth quarter, the defending champion Charleston Rebels held on to win Game 1 of the championship series 62-58 against their arch-rivals from San Jose.
The game started out with an offensive burst, with Charleston leading 19-18 after one quarter thanks mainly to Benny Gumm's 11 points (15 in the game total). Gumm, who fouled out seven times during the regular season, again suffered from personals, picking up his fourth of the game right at the beginning of the third quarter. He would foul out early in the fourth.
Meanwhile, the game turned into a slugfest in the second half, with both teams imposing their will defensively on their opponents. San Jose, shooting just 47.8 percent for the game, trailed by 10, 48-38 midway through the third, then battled back within four with just five time units remaining before finally succumbing.
Substitute center Heater Vanmeter was outstanding in a starting role for the injured Jonny Cockaroo of Charleston.
