Dallas 80, Milwaukee 64
WHIZ KIDS WALK IT HOME
DALLAS -- The ridiculously youthful Dallas Demons, unbeatable at home this season (9-0 including playoffs) got off to a 24-14 lead after one quarter and were never threatened on the way to an 80-64 championship game win over the Milwaukee Greyhounds. The triumph was expected, and secured the franchise's sixth MBA title, just one behind the Milwaukee organization's second-best overall total.
This team, featuring three rookie starters, a second-year man who was injured for the post-season and a third-year star, finished with an overall record of 13-4 including the playoffs. How they lost four games is somewhat of a puzzle, and at least half of the MBA franchises are hoping that something can be done to break up the Whiz Kids (the only likely possibility in that direction is free agency for at least two Demons starters...which is not likely).
A doff of the cap to the losing Greyhounds, picked for last in the East, who nearly pulled off an all-time shocker in taking Dallas to the full five-game Finals. Milwaukee has now gone a record 34 seasons without a championship, having made it to the Finals five times since their last title in Season 18.
Dallas has won championships in Seasons 20, 21, 28, 46, 47 and now 52.
Congratulations to Demons owner Tyler Masterson and team coach Buzzy Bazinski, who brought home the hardware in his rookie coaching season.
PLAYER OF THE GAME
34 GVP...The last of the five starters to earn a POG in the playoffs, Dallas center BIGGUS DICKUS followed his 19-point Game 4 performance with a game-high 21 points in the championship clincher. The 7-foot behemoth did so despite going up against shot-blocking specialist Lothario Fartlek, who rejected a game-high 6 shots. Still, it was Dickus who dominated that battle, allowing Fartlek a mere 2 points while also pulling down a game-high 9 rebounds. The rookie was 9 for 18 from the floor and 3 for 3 from the foul line, blocked 2 shots and passed out 2 assists.
Other 20-Plus GVP performers
26 GVP...Third-year wunderkind Dallas guard Juzan Djinn completed his most excellent playoff run with a 19-point game that included 4 rebounds, 2 assist and a blocked shot as he kept Milwaukee's top scorer Thomas Thomas Thomas from going off offensively.22 GVP...The old man in the Dallas lineup (due to Satan Israel's injury), forward Al A. Orden, will be wearing his third title ring, all with the same franchise, for whom he has toiled these12 seasons. The steady 6-8 player scored 12 pints, snagged 5 boards, assisted a game-high 4 times and added the only steal by his team.
20 GVP...Eight-season point guard Flip Phelps led his team in scoring with 18-points, dominating Rookie of the Year Kopi Luwak of Dallas in the process. He drilled three treys in the game and scored all those points despite losing a full quarter's worth of time to injury and forced rest in this game. He added 1 rebound and 1 assist.
20 GVP...Despite being hounded by defensive stalwart Juzan Djinn, Milwaukee shooting guard Thomas Thomas Thomas managed to put in 14 points worth of buckets, grab 3 rebounds, hand out a team-high 2 assists and snag 1 steal.
