Season 53 Free Agents

Right off the bat, the main observation here is that the young, powerful defending champions from Dallas lost absolutely nobody of any importance. Their one donation to the free agents was center Meethorp Bleepbloop Zandar, who played briefly in just 3 games. They are still the overwhelming favorites as of right now.

A goodly number of fine players (8 of 12) will be in the Season 53 draft, but no major superstar.

-- 12 players declared for free agency, meaning that grouped with the 16 incoming rookies, there will be 28 players in the upcoming draft...enough for two full rounds and 8 of 10 teams (depending on trades) getting three picks. (Exact number of teams will be detailed after rookies are made and the draft is previewed).

-- Dave teams lost 6 players. Tyler's teams lost 6 players.

-- 7 of the 12 free agents were starters...4 from Dave teams...3 from Tyler teams)

-- Two teams, Oklahoma City and Philadelphia, lost nobody to free agency.

-- Los Angeles, already the worst team prior to free agency, lost the most players with 3, including top scorer, guard Flufferton Springs. They currently have just 4 players on their roster,

-- Hardest hit among the playoff contenders was Charleston, which lost its two youngest starters, top scoring guard Vinny Zazeech and All-MBA center Johnny Bananas.

-- Four teams (Oklahoma City, Philadelphia, Dallas and San Jose) lost zero starters.

-- Sacramento lost Hall of Fame center J.J. Gargantuan.

-- Speaking of Gargantuan, he was one of two players involved in big trades made prior to last season who immediately skedaddled from Dave teams this season. The other was Charleston's center Bananas, who cost the team a second round pick now belonging to Seattle.

-- Free agents by position are: guards (4), forwards (4), centers (4)

-- Gillette lost the best player in franchise history, guard Freddy Gooch.

-- 1 Hall of Fame player .... center J.J. Gargantuan

-- 1 All-MBA player from last season...center Johnny Bananas

If, from these observations, you come to the conclusion that once again, Tyler teams came out on top for the zillionth time (his two best teams, Dallas and Philly lost nobody), you would be absolutely, unbelievably correct.

The Golden Guards of Season 50 examined/rated halfway through (?) their careers

 THE GOLDEN GUARDS OF S-50

There has never been, before or since, a talent haul like that of the rookie guards class of Season 50. All six of the guards who entered the league that season were standouts, one way or the other. After three seasons, we can safely say there is not a bum in the lot.

All six have been starters every season for their respective teams. At the very least, every one of them have made an All Star Game appearance. Not a one can be deemed a disappointment.

Three have made All-MBA, with the talent of this class making the achievement even tougher than usual.

As of this writing, all six have remained with the team they started their career with.

After three seasons in the MBA, it is time to go over their accomplishments thus far and to rank them in terms of what they have already accomplished and where they’re overall talent ranking would be among their Season 50 Guards Class.

More Season 52 milestones

The championship won by the Dallas Demons marks just the 18th time in 52 seasons that a title team placed no players on the All-MBA first team.

Freddy Gooch of Gillette established a one-game scoring record for Gillette in Season 52 with a 35-point game.

The next game Wawa Wewa plays in Season 53 will give him the all-time consecutive games played mark in MBA history. He is currently tied with Hall of Famer Raisin Sport with 120 straight games.

Dallas will go into Season 53 with a 9-game regular season winning streak. The record is 16 straight regular season wins, set by Dallas during late Season 46 and early Season 47.

Great Gruncle Terry is just the fourth Hall of Fame player to earn that distinction without ever having earned All-MBA honors.

Milwaukee, having swept Philadelphia in Season 52, is now the only franchise with a winning record over every team in the MBA.

The Gillette Humps are again changing head coaches. Out is Tiger Masterson (who howled at the prospect) after two seasons. In is newly retired Otto Palindrome. Tiger Masterson was 8-12 in his two seasons, the two best in franchise history. We expected more from the team last season.

JESSE SHERSHOT MILESTONES ACHIEVED IN SEASON 52

n             Jesse Shershot moves from 17th most honored player of all time to number 11 ranking, tied with Link Lennex and Stu Nod. In doing so he passed Cam Bodia, Doc Watson, Jonny Cockaroo and Diamond Dallas Paige. He is now right behind Mamadou Zongo.

n             Jesse Shershot broke his own franchise record for best single scoring season…21.4ppg

n             Jesse Shershot is one of just six players with 6 or more All-MBA foil stars. Only Curly Hogbottom and Naf Naf have achieved 7.

n             Jesse Shershot is just the third player in MBA history to make All-MBA in every one of his first 6 seasons. The others are Naf Naf and Chip Battoe. Naf Naf upped the mark to a record 7 straight before retiring after his 7th season.

n              Jesse Shershot third regular season MVP is tied for third-most in history with Cappy Gambol, Curly Hogbottom, Sagittal Occlusal and Hrundi V. Bakshi. The top two winners of regular season MVPs are Chip Battoe with 5 and Naf Naf with 6.

Season 52 Finals Game 5...Milwaukee at Dallas

Dallas 80, Milwaukee 64

WHIZ KIDS WALK IT HOME

DALLAS -- The ridiculously youthful Dallas Demons, unbeatable at home this season (9-0 including playoffs) got off to a 24-14 lead after one quarter and were never threatened on the way to an 80-64 championship game win over the Milwaukee Greyhounds. The triumph was expected, and secured the franchise's sixth MBA title, just one behind the Milwaukee organization's second-best overall total.

This team, featuring three rookie starters, a second-year man who was injured for the post-season and a third-year star, finished with an overall record of 13-4 including the playoffs. How they lost four games is somewhat of a puzzle, and at least half of the MBA franchises are hoping that something can be done to break up the Whiz Kids (the only likely possibility in that direction is free agency for at least two Demons starters...which is not likely).

A doff of the cap to the losing Greyhounds, picked for last in the East, who nearly pulled off an all-time shocker in taking Dallas to the full five-game Finals. Milwaukee has now gone a record 34 seasons without a championship, having made it to the Finals five times since their last title in Season 18.

Dallas has won championships in Seasons 20, 21, 28, 46, 47 and now 52.

Congratulations to Demons owner Tyler Masterson and team coach Buzzy Bazinski, who brought home the hardware in his rookie coaching season.

PLAYER OF THE GAME
34 GVP...The last of the five starters to earn a POG in the playoffs, Dallas center BIGGUS DICKUS followed his 19-point Game 4 performance with a game-high 21 points in the championship clincher. The 7-foot behemoth did so despite going up against shot-blocking specialist Lothario Fartlek, who rejected a game-high 6 shots. Still, it was Dickus who dominated that battle, allowing Fartlek a mere 2 points while also pulling down a game-high 9 rebounds. The rookie was 9 for 18 from the floor and 3 for 3 from the foul line, blocked 2 shots and passed out 2 assists.

Other 20-Plus GVP performers
26 GVP...Third-year wunderkind Dallas guard Juzan Djinn completed his most excellent playoff run with a 19-point game that included 4 rebounds, 2 assist and a blocked shot as he kept Milwaukee's top scorer Thomas Thomas Thomas from going off offensively.

22 GVP...The old man in the Dallas lineup (due to Satan Israel's injury), forward Al A. Orden, will be wearing his third title ring, all with the same franchise, for whom he has toiled these12 seasons. The steady 6-8 player scored 12 pints, snagged 5 boards, assisted a game-high 4 times and added the only steal by his team.

20 GVP...Eight-season point guard Flip Phelps led his team in scoring with 18-points, dominating Rookie of the Year Kopi Luwak of Dallas in the process. He drilled three treys in the game and scored all those points despite losing a full quarter's worth of time to injury and forced rest in this game. He added 1 rebound and 1 assist.

20 GVP...Despite being hounded by defensive stalwart Juzan Djinn, Milwaukee shooting guard Thomas Thomas Thomas managed to put in 14 points worth of buckets, grab 3 rebounds, hand out a team-high 2 assists and snag 1 steal.
